GM David (Late Bloomers)

September 3, 2019

General Manager of Late Bloomers

Best Season Finish: Champion (2018)

Overal Record: 34-30

GM David is without a doubt one of the all time most successful managers in the MFFL, securing a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finish in just 4 years since the league's inception. This past year, David led his crew to a 6th seed playoff spot before spurring the then named Belicheck Yo Selfs onto a historic postseason run climaxing with an MFFL Championship. With his name now cemented onto the trophy for all time (or glued onto the trophy until the glue wears off and the printer paper falls off), we caught up with the reigning champion to get a glimpse of one of the true shining stars of the league:

Welcome David! Thank you so much for joining us here at MFFL studios. Firstly, you and the Bloomers faced some adversity during the previous season. How were you able to stay focused and sneak into the playoffs to claim your championship?

"For sure, it was a tough battle all season. It came down to a few games near the end stretch. Fueling players properly and allowing them to break out on their time was a key. We grinded out some wins early and allowed the hot, healthy hand to take it from there. As long as we peak at the right times we are good."

Yes very great to hear, who would you say was your team MVP throughout the season and playoffs?

"They are two different players for sure. The playoffs is undoubtedly Derrick Henry. Without him we would not have won or been in the playoffs to start with. Regular season would either be Devante Adams or Drew Brees. Both put up big numbers. Devante helped fuel the offense and in some circumstances picked up game winning yards."

Sweet, and finally after wiedling the trophy for a few months now and getting ready for the upcoming season. what has been your favorite thing about being champion of MFFL?

"The champions club for sure. Having the clout and status tied into my holding the trophy has been my favorite aspect."

Can we be expecting a repeat this year for the Bloomers?

"Forecasting for the season has not come in yet. One can only hope that we will find the first repeat champion in our league."

Love the humble confidence there. Well David, thank you for the input, it's been a pleasure as always!

"Yeah thank you so much! I appreciate the interview."

GM Dominic (The Underachievers)

GM Dominic has been an integral part of the league since before its very inception. As one of the founding members of MFFL, Dominic played a crucial role in the formation of the league in 2015 and continues to make an impact as a 5th year general manager. The Underachievers have undergone a few rounds of rebranding under their senior management, and have seen success come and go each year. GM Dominic has often been ridiculed for his inconsistency between seasons, boasting only a 50% playoff appearance in 4 years. Fans of The Underachievers celebrate the longtime manager for his tenacity against adversity, leading the team to a historic playoff run in 2017 that ended in a close defeat in the championship. GM Dominic has not led the varying levels of failure take away from his motivation and ambition, as he has launched a promising campaign here in 2019 to hopefully make a return to the playoffs. We brought Dominic into MFFL Studios to get a closer look at The Underachievers and his outlook for the remaining stretch of the season.

First of all, welcome to MFFL Studios Dom! We are very excited to have you here!

"Thank you for having me, it's a lot bigger than I imagined."

Of course! So although you have MFFL Runner Up in your title as general manager and have been honored as a founding member of the league, you certainly do not have a historic legacy record-wise when it comes to your actual fantasy performance. A bottom half all time winning percentage of .456 and have yet to launch back to back playoff campaigns. However, this season has a refreshing feel to it doesn't it? You have launched an impressive start to your 2019 season sitting on the cusp of playoffs at 4-3. How is your optimism on your team going forward into this second half of the season?

"Yes, I actually feel cautiously optimistic going into the second half of the season. I've had a couple of tough losses and a few close wins, so I know the season's outlook could be very different than it is now. With that being said, I feel confident that my gropu of guys is going to be a serious title contending team. My keys to focus on this second half is maintaining my team. I feel like we are in a position where we can make the playoffs unless I make some boneheaded decisions, so I've been very careful and calculated in all my transactions to this point. Other managers have the propensity to choke when things get tough, so I'm counting on my teams consistent performance to outpace some booming teams. This season is a marathon, and I think my team has what it takes to go the distance."

Great to hear you have trust in your team going forward. It seems however, that other managers do not share this trust in your team, or even you as a manager for that matter. In fact, you are often ridiculed by other managers and were even voted as the midseason worst manager of the league. How does this affect your mindset towards certain matchups and motivation for improvement?

"They hate us cus the ain't us. To be honest with you, I think people hate on me because they're jealous. Jealous that I have a clear vision when it comes to fantasy football. People think it's only the analytics, which is bogus. I definitely think there is some skill in fantasy football, but I'd say luck has a bigger factor to success. I mean, look at Grafton versus Darren and that paints a pretty clear picture. I definitely think people's criticism of my team motivates me. I come in each week with a chip on my shoulder, and I relish the opportunity to put vocal, and quite frankly ignorant, managers back in their place."

Yes, we at MFFL Studios love the friendly competition. In order to make it deep into the playoffs and really put other managers back in their place, you will certainly need some of your players to really step up as leaders and playmakers down the stretch. Are there any players you are expecting could really make that jump in this second half of the season?

"I'm really looking for Bell and Cook to make strides in this second half. These players definitely got out to slow starts, but they've been picking up some steam. Bell finally has a quarterback, and Cook seems to be building a good relationship with the Saints, so look for those players to make an impact moving forward."

Lovely, and on the topic of looking forward, what matchups are you most looking forward to? You currently have 2 big rivalry games approaching on the schedule and with each game becoming increasingly more important, are there any dates you have circled on your calendar as must win affairs?

"In terms of my matchups coming up, I am probably most looking forward to my game against GM Darren and the Mikes in week 12. This is always a classic DTDB conversation, and I'm a little miffed that I let Darren get the better of me in week 1. I don't think my team had developed its true identity then, so I'm expecting a revenge win in week 12."

That will certainly be a heavily covered matchup. Now let's talk a bit about The Underachievers as a franchise. You guys went through a rebranding period this offseason. What is the story on how you and the front office landed on the name "The Underachievers"?

"The name actually goes back to my fantasy history. People have historically criticized me for having poor teams. While my regular season record might be subpar, I think my winning earnings speak more to my talent. Placing in the top half of overall winnings is a good feeling, so I feel like I get an undue amount of criticism. I also feel like I use the underdog mentality. People don't really expect much from us as a franchise, and their mistakes will cost them. Having a name like 'The Underachievers'  makes people think we will be an easy win, which is rarely the case. I look forward to dashing peoples weekly hopes and using the underdog mentality to beat my opponents."

As one of the underdogs, if you had to predict the 2019 champion right now, who would it be?

"It would just be poor management if I said I would win this years championship. Although, I fully believe my squad is capable of winning this year. I would have to say GM Grafton and his Meanies if he can sneak into the playoffs. He has a talented roster, and it shows with his point totals. Unfortunately, he hit some bumps at the beginning of the year, but I think he has a good shot of winning if he makes the playoffs. Alternatively, I have supreme confidence that GM August will capture the Dansky, but losing in a close matchup to GM Pasca."

Ahh ha ha... both of those managers have surely had their struggles this year. Well, this has been a great time, now before we go is there anything you would like to say to the rest of the league, its managers, and fans?

"Of course, my last words and my motto: Keep Pounding. Every year, people count me out, but I'll have you know I have some surprises up my sleeve. I am confident that we will shock the league this year. I would like to close this interview with a hot take: one or more of the top 3 current teams will not make the playoffs this year."

Wow, that is certainly a bold prediction. Well thank you once again for coming and doing this interview with us. Best of luck to you and The Let Downs the rest of this season!

"Thank you for having me! It's been a pleasure."
