DTDB, Dom Top Darren Bottom, Darren Top Dom Bottom. That saying is something I adopted from arguably one of the greatest TV series I have ever seen, The League. I have had some time to reflect upon that TV Series and what I love most about fantasy football. My passion for fantasy football is not as simple as some people may think; it’s not all about the analytics, stats, or loving football. It is about the traditions, relationships, competition, and everything that goes into how I fit into my fantasy football leagues. Leagues without the traditions, trash talk, and relationships are simply just failures. A quality fantasy football league goes beyond managers setting line-ups and meeting together to watch the Sunday games. This brings me to my question; what makes a fantasy football league great? Furthermore, is the Millbrook Fantasy Football League great?
The short answer to the latter question is; somewhat. I do believe our league is great, in some aspects. The defensive schemes, the team website, weekly round-ups, tips and tricks, and overall commitment to the league are lovely to have. However, I challenge myself, and all of us, to push for more. I want some more legendary traditions, I want more competition and trash talk, I want crazy-ass trades and negotiations, I want us to have the best league we possibly can. Trash talk is something I love most about fantasy football. I love being able to be competitive and talk shit to each and every one of you. I love to shell it out but I also love to hear yall’s best insults and creative attacks against me. Darren should get shit on for adding and dropping players multiple times in a week, Ian should get shit on for drafting Andrew Luck in the first round that one year, Pasca should get shit on for being arguably the worst statistical manager in the league, Kelly not showing up for the draft because he was “hungover” should be brought up every time he fucks up (which is a lot), and Brody never actually picking his own team is something we should never let go. These are just a few things that should never die.
Trash talk and ruthless attacks against others are examples of how the league can curb the possibility of it becoming stale. The reality of our situation is that we are graduating from college soon, and I want this to continue well into the future. I want to be able to distract myself from my desk job 10 years from now, and the way I can do that is through a fun and competitive atmosphere. I remember when I used to send gay gifs to our group message just to piss Darren off. Why have we not continued to constantly annoy the hell out of each other and get under each other’s skin? This is something that makes a league great. This is what makes The League so entertaining. Even though I love the passion for analytics and creating a more complicated scoring system, I do not want us to get away from the fun that made this league so great the first couple of years. This is why I am writing this article, I want us to be ruthless and create a competitive atmosphere that makes me continue to strive for the MFFL Trophy. The money is great, but shitting on all of you guys and having bragging rights is what I love the most. With that being said, DTDB.
